iEtherpad.com Update

So you may have noticed that iEtherpad.com has been down for a week+ and that there has been no update from the site owner.

The owner of the site is called “Prasanna Sankaranarayanan” and is ignoring emails from myself, his users and the Etherpad foundation.

Alarm bells rang over 6 months ago at the Etherpad foundation when Prasanna refused to contribute any of his source to the Etherpad project and did not place an SLA or any legal documentation on the website. Due to this iEtherpad.com was not included in the public sites section of Etherpad.org

So who recommended iEtherpad.com?
A bunch of people, and I told them not to but I was obviously biased but mheh. What can I do if people don’t listen? Now I’m recieving emails from people saying they have lost their work.. Three things here:

  1. Your work was not covered by an SLA
  2. You should have had your work backed up
  3. If you want to an SLA covered Etherpad service see PrimaryPad

So what’s going on with your data?
You have probably lost it, but go knock on Hawthorne Labs inbox. Hawthorne Labs is a company Prasanna founded and if they run that company the same way they have run iEtherpad.com then they are bound to have some sad customers and probably an inbox full of complaints and/or law suits.

Make a stand people also be aware that you should be saving local copies of your work and remember that if there is no SLA in place the company doesn’t have to help you.

Blowing our own trumpet.

Sometimes we get email that really make all of the hard work we put in worthwhile. Here is one of those emails:

Just a note to say thank you for the excellent two packages I have used today. As you are no doubt aware that today was a strike day and unfortunately our school decided to close. Without politics being discussed I decided not to strike and used the Internet and two of your packages to host my lessons – run from the classroom, but with children in their homes. The technology worked seamlessly. My only issue was not having names on primary paint.  The software was quality all over and made my interactive lessons almost as they would be in the classroom. Thanks again.

So not only did we get some positive, quality feedback we also got a bug report :) Thanks to the sender!
